Výchozím hlediskem pro kompozici tohoto čísla Slova a smyslu byla otázka, do jaké míry lze rozumět uměleckým strategiím moderní literatury, konfrontujeme‑li její umělecké postupy s pojmem totalita. Hned zpočátku je však třeba podotknout, že pod pojmem totalita nemyslíme jen a výhradně jeho spojitost s konkrétními, historicky, ideově a zakotvenými mocenskými vazbami. Pojmu totalita se snažíme využít v jeho širším, pro interpretaci moderního umění a literatury ovšem klíčovém významu.

The basis for the composition of this issue of Word and Sense is the question to what extent it is possible to understand the artistic strategies of modern culture in a moment of confrontation of its artistic methods with the concept of totalitarianism. However it is necessary to point out that the term totalitarianism is not used only and exclusively in relation to a specific, historical, ideological and political fixed connection. We try to use the term in its broader sense, which is necessary and crucial for an interpretation of modern art and literature.

Svět literatury je světem textů, jejich možných provázaností i způsobů jejich četby a rozumění. Události k němu patří, ale jsou spíše složkou druhotnou, spadající kamsi do zákulisí, do literárního života či kulturního prostoru. Přesto lze i ve světě literatury spatřit čas od času dění, které událostní charakter nesporně má. Fakt, že se 22. října 2012 Lubomír Doležel dožil v nebývalé fyzické i duševní svěžesti devadesáti let, takovou událostí je. Proto je i dominantou tohoto čísla, míněného jako pocta čili Festschrift.

The realm of literature is a realm of texts, of their potential links, and of the ways of reading and understanding them. It does include events, too – but rather as a secondary element, outlined somewhere in the background, in the field of culture or „literary life“. Still, even the realm of literature does now and then admits an indubitable event; and one such is the fact that on October 22, 2012, Lubomír Doležel has reached ninety years of age – in enviable strength and unique vivacity of mind.

Téma tohoto čísla, vztah literatury a vizuality, stejně jako jeho název, Oko (v) textu, jako by nerušeně kráčely po stopách evidence a pomalu se přibližovaly když ne banalitě, pak alespoň zcela pokojným državám. Co je tak třeskutého na zjištění, že literatura a vizualita jsou spojité nádoby, že při čtení obtahujeme pohledem písmo, zviditelňujeme napsané a noříme se do obraznosti vlastní i autorovy? Popravdě řečeno, celkem nic, zkusme se tedy zeptat jinak. Jaký je rozdíl mezi obrazem a textem a co mají naopak společného?

The topic of this issue – the relations of literature and visuality – as well as its title, The Eye of/in the Text, may seem to have already been thoroughly researched, if not simply banal. What is so striking about the realization that literature and visuality are intrinsically connected – that as we follow the written word, we become immersed in the author’s imagery, as well as the imagery created by our own minds? Nothing at all, in fact. So let us pose the question differently.

Časopis Slovo a smysl se ve svém 16. čísle zaměřil zvláště na téma středo‑evropských vztahů a souvislostí. Soustřeďuje převážně texty, které v různorodých historických sondách zkoumají mezi‑prostory rozmanitosti, setkávání a střetávání, upozorňují zároveň na možnost nahlížet literárněhistorické jevy v širších stylových, myšlenkových, společenských aj. souvislostech.

Issue 16 of the journal Slovo a smysl, focuses on the topic of Central‑European relationships and contexts. It presents texts that in various historical examinations analyze in‑between‑spaces of diversity, encounters and clashes, texts that bring attention to the possibility of seeing the literary‑historical phenomena in broader stylistic, intellectual, and social contexts.
