Osmé číslo Slova a smyslu přináší svědectví o tom, jak mohou úvahy o kultuře a literatuře inspirovat směry, které se v poslední době začínají uplatňovat v jazykovědě: jde nejobecněji řečeno o lingvistiku orientovanou na člověka a jeho kognitivitu. Do popředí se dostávají taková témata, jako je konceptuální metafora, tělesná představová schémata, mentální prostory, kategorizace, obecněji vzato antropocentrismus jazyka, a konečně i otázka univerzálií a kulturního relativismu.

The eighth issue of Word and Sense bears witness to how reflections on culture and literature can be inspired by recent trends in linguistics that focus on human cognition. These trends emphasize, for instance, conceptual metaphor; physical modes of expressing concepts; linguistics and the mind; categorizations; a general anthropocentrism of language; and questions of universal and cultural relativism.

The topic for this issue of Word and Sense came out of a discussion among the editorial board members in September of last year. The suggestion of our Italian colleague, Annalisa Cosentino, to devote issue 7 to poetry gradually expanded to include the place of poetry in contemporary literary discourse and the varied methodological approaches to how poetry is interpreted.

V šestém čísle časopisu Slovo a smysl jsme se snažili poukázat na kontexty literatury, na její hranice a na možné způsoby jejího přesahování. Jeden z podstatných základů tohoto čísla představuje myšlení Jurije Lotmana, který se kromě literatury, jež mu byla jeho vlastním a milovaným předmětem, zabýval také jejím kontextem, tedy kulturní semiosférou. Tu pokládal za zásadní pro poznání literatury a člověka, který ji vytváří, čte a žije. Lotmanově sémiotice můžeme porozumět také jako dynamice vztahů mezi tím, co je považováno za tzv. centrum (tedy za podstatné), a co vytváří tzv.

In this, the sixth issue of Word and Sense, we have tried to highlight the contexts of literature, its boundaries, and the ways in which we can move beyond it. One cornerstone in the architecture of this issue is the approach of Yury Lotman, who, in addition to literature – his own much-beloved subject – also took an interest in its context: the cultural semiosphere. He believed it to be fundamental to understanding both literature and any person who creates it, reads it and lives it.

Páté číslo časopisu Slovo a smysl vznikalo jako náš osobní opožděný dialog s přítelem a kolegou, který s námi v „pestré řadě“ za jedním stolem již nebeseduje, ale kterému jsme neodvykli naslouchat.

The fifth issue of Word and Sense was conceived as our personal belated dialogue with a friend and colleague who no longer converses with us at a single table in “festive array,” but to whose words we are still wont to listen with rapt attention. Jan Lehár, a scholar who moves with silent sovereignty through the centuries of Czech literature, inspired us to attempt to stimulate discussion of old Czech culture.
