Toto číslo je spojeno se zcela konkrétním místem, časem a náladou. Kodaňská ulice ve starých Vršovicích má v sobě ještě kouzlo bulváru z přelomu století, náznak aleje, byť dnes radnicí velmi zanedbávané, i pompu architektonické okázalosti českých stavitelů začátku století. V létě navíc nebývale ožívá, roubena mnoha zahrádkami. Nejmenší a nejdomáčtější z nich se nachází před podnikem hodným svého jména, nanocafe.

This issue is connected with a very specific place, time, and mood. Kodaňská Street in old Vršovice still retains the magic of a turn‑of‑the‑century avenue, though neglected by the Town Hall, with the pompous architectural ostentation of early twentieth‑century Czech buildings. It comes to life magnificently in the summer, when the many beer gardens that line the street reach full bloom. The smallest and coziest garden is the one in front of Nanocafe.

Implicitním i explicitním tématem tohoto čísla je setkávání (se) literatury se skutečností.

The encounter of literature with reality is both the implicit and explicit theme of this issue. It is immediately obvious how many questions and problems arise in connection with this perspective on literature, as these are evidently not mutually incompatible conceptual realms, and in fact the boundary between “literature” and “reality” is not clearly established. Therefore, when we encounter the terms together we tend to distinguish them only through intuition.

Dvojčíslo 11–12 stojí rozkročené mezi břehy přírodních a humanitních věd. Tyto oblasti jsou v současném akademickém a hlavně úředním světě příliš často, zbytečně a mnohdy účelově antagonizovány, jakkoli jejich prostupující se myšlenková a konceptuální východiska dlouhodobě přinášejí oboustranně nezpochybnitelnou inspiraci. Přítomné dvojčíslo Slova a smyslu tuto byrokraticky zmanipulovanou situaci samozřejmě sotva napraví.

The double issue 11–12 straddles the line between the natural sciences and the humanities. These two disciplines are too often unnecessarily opposed to one another in the contemporary academic and especially the official world, particularly for practical purposes, although their intersecting intellectual and conceptual points of departure are in the long term undoubtedly mutually inspiring. The present double issue of Word and Sense will, of course, do little to remedy this situation, created to a significant extent by bureaucracy.

Tematickým jádrem předkládaného dvojčísla Slova a smyslu se stal problém příběhu, vyprávění a naratologie jako jejich odborného zastřešení. Naratologie se již řadu let profiluje v odborné debatě jako produktivní směr, který přinesl celou škálu nových metodologických perspektiv a podnětů. Nicméně – málokterá literárněvědná disciplína dokázala v poměrně krátké době samu sebe spoutat do bezmála nepřehledného množství paralelních konceptů, subsystémů a metodologických variant.

The problem of plot and narration, and of narratology as their overarching scholarly category, has become the thematic core of this double issue of Word and Sense. Narratology has come to the fore in the scholarly debate over the last few years, proving to be a productive school of thought that brings to bear an entire range of new methodological perspectives and stimuli. Nonetheless, no literary discipline has managed to embed itself in the almost incomprehensible multitude of parallel concepts, subsystems and methodological variants in such a short space of time.
