Michal Mareš

The roots of the idea of translating Michal Mareš’s little book reach back into the 1970s, when, shortly after being able to add the word andělíčkářka ‘(backstreet) abortionist’ to my Czech vocabulary, I coincidentally happened on a copy of this eponymous ‘concise novel’ in the then well‑known second‑hand bookshop in Dlážděná Street in Prague. The author’s name meant nothing to me and I was actually first drawn to the book by its cover. Added to that, however, this copy carried the author’s autograph and a dedication to a so far unidentified Božena Černá.

The Angel‑maker

A land of misery – in place of an introduction

The sun beats down on the wretched plains of Istria. Here and there some feeble stalks of maize in pockets of earth washed down by the rain. But otherwise just stony, stony, stony ground, in which – Lord knows how – a few scattered cypresses and crippled olive and fig trees have found nourishment.

Walter Biemel

Walter Biemel se narodil v roce 1918 v Kronstadtu (dnešní Brașov v Rumunsku). Patří mezi nejvýznamnější Heideggerovy žáky a těsné osobní přátelství jej pojilo s Janem Patočkou. Působil nejprve na Porýnsko–westfálském technickém vysokém učení v Cáchách a poté na Státní akademii umění v Düsseldorfu. Je editorem čtyř svazků (včetně Idejí I a Krize evropských věd) v řadě sebraných spisů Husserliana a autorem knih o Kantovi, Heideggerovi, Sartrovi a moderním umění. Česky je k dispozici jeho úvod do Heideggerova myšlení (orig. 1976, č. 1995), dvě stati k J.

Stavba a otázka legitimity (K existenciální dimenzi Kafkovy povídky Doupě)

If there is such a thing as a collective consciousness, then its Czech version would certainly label the works of Jiří Karásek ze Lvovic (1871–1951) as decadence. Although deeply rooted in a European context, Czech decadence represented its own specific interpretation closely related to a general spiritual and political crisis in Czech society at the end of the 19th century.

Fatherhood

It was horror mingled with a strong feeling of disgust that overwhelmed him when he found out that he would be… a father. The horror was all the greater given that he did not expect such a thing in the least.

Stagnant Waters

The Death of Salomé (A Nubian Apocrypha)

Day after day Salomé came in secret with a single slave to the hut of Séhon, hunter of gazelles.

The beautiful boy, all tanned and dark, with such white teeth that nothing was brighter, with black tresses that shone to a dark blue hue, as though sprinkled with azure powder, was loved by the Jewish princess, who tried in vain to hide the traces of old age with make‑up.

Only her eyes still shone in bright, flaming points like stars. But the exhausted pallor of her withered skin testified to their deceit.

The Roses of St. Sebastian

Before he knew Christ, Sebastian lived like all the other young cavaliers of Diocletian’s court, wasting day after day in worldly vanities.

This was in the time when light‑footed Diana still roamed the woods in gilded sandals with a throng of her nymphs. But her beauty was already too weary, and the goddess sometimes had moments when she felt the shadow of age. Now she would hardly have transformed Actaeon into a stag to be torn apart by his own dogs: she would not be likely to spurn lovers who adored her.
